Massachusetts Considers Changes to Gambling Laws, Including iGaming Legalization
Massachusetts, which currently offers both online and retail sports betting, may soon expand its gambling laws. A recently filed proposal seeks to legalize online casino gambling (iGaming), which would place the state alongside others like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, where legal online gambling is already available.
Although online sports betting launched in Massachusetts in March 2023, the state does not yet offer iGaming, unlike its neighboring states. The proposed iGaming legislation could change that, providing new opportunities in the state’s gambling sector.
In addition, lawmakers are proposing changes to existing sports betting regulations, including higher taxes, consumer protection limits, and increased funding for problem gambling treatment. The proposal also suggests affordability checks, limits on in-play betting, and spending caps, which could significantly impact the way gambling operates in Massachusetts if passed.
